It's a marvel of design, well worth looking into even if you don't adopt
it.  The papers here http://www.lua.org/papers.html are interesting.  The
developers wrote a paper on the history if the language that's a good read:
http://www.lua.org/history.html.  And metalua <http://metalua.luaforge.net/>is
a real mind-bender.
