yes, we're locking mulgara, taking an LVM snapshot, and then copying the
datastore with rdiff-backup.

i erroneously though one could take an rsync copy of a running server
and live, so i tried that as well.

but it is still the case that our clean backup is failing.

to rule out the possiblity that rdiff-backup is the problem, i'll make
an rsync copy and provide that to you and ronald for investigation...
