have you noticed that at the very left there are 3 icons with which
you can change the look of the site? have you tried the "straight"
version? dropping the background alltogether in the default version
sort of takes the idea of the layout away. if the problem is that
grave it would be better if someone came up with a new layout i
guess. if the general vote was no layout at all, just a logo on a
white background, well ... "straight" would be my proposal.

it sits there as intended (and it's not gray, but brownish ;-). a
matter of taste maybe. the bar connects the left hand site navigation
with the page navigation at the top. that was more obvious in the
last version and a little too distracting. maybe i exxagerated the
other way round this time. it also makes more sense in the "fluid"
version as it somehow "holds" the gliding content pane but i thought
it wouldn't hurt to have it in "fixed" either, and thereby tie the
two more closely together (since the raison d'etre for the different
styles is not to make the site look totally different in each style
but to accentuate certain aspects).

there are some pages which are very long and which are much more
usable with the help of that inner page navigation. try for example
